There are several forms of family violence that include sexual abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, economic deprivation or issuing threats. The primary objective of family violence is to gain control or frighten the other person into submission. According to statistics, women are most likely to get victimized by family violence and the perpetrator of violence is likely to be the male partner.
According to a survey conducted in different parts of the world, around 22 percent women in the United States and 29 percent in Canada reported family abuse. In the United States, almost 20 percent of all the violent crimes that are experienced by women are due to violence meted out by a partner or spouse. This is in stark contrast with those experienced by men, which comes to around 3 percent. These figures tend to increase further in case of pregnant women. Domestic violence during pregnancy includes STDs, injuries, vaginal tears, burns, pains, vaginal bleeding and miscarriage inflicted due to an aggressive partner.
Another important category of people that get affected due to family violence are children. In a research conducted in the UK, it has been found that around 40-60 percent of women and men who abuse their partners also tend to abuse their children either physically or sexually. Other ways in which children get exposed to family violence include witnessing violence or being used as a means of violence by the perpetrator.
