Unemployment rate in the US touched the peak in 2007 and 2008, and now it has come down marginally. There were 11 million unemployed Americans in the year 2008, and now at least 5 million Americans are still taking unemployment benefits. Some of the hardest hit industries are real estate, financial services, hospitality and service industry, and manufacturing sector. Many people have suffered a job loss in these industries, and it literally shook up the American economy.
Here is the current unemployment rate for some of the states in the US.
Michigan is a state that is worst hit, with an unemployment rate of 14.3 percent. The next is Nevada with a current unemployment rate of 13 percent. Rhode Island has an employment rate of 12.7 percent, while South Carolina, California and District of Columbia have an unemployment rate of 12.6 percent, 12.5 percent and 12 percent respectively. In Florida, the current unemployment rate is 11.9, while in Illinois and North Carolina it is 11.3 and 11.1 respectively. Alabama is also struggling with an unemployment rate of 11.1 percent.
In Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee, the current unemployment rate is 10.9, 10.8 and 10.7 respectively. The states that have the lowest current unemployment rate are North Dakota at 4.2 percent, Nebraska at 4.6 percent, and South Dakota at 4.8 percent. In all the other states in the US, the current unemployment rate is more than 6 percent.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the current unemployment rate in the country is 9.7 percent.
