Political Supporters Of Same-Sex Marriage
Though same-sex marriage is gaining quite a lot of support in the U.S., there is still a long way to go. Though same-sex marriage has a lot support among lay people, political supporters are still hesitant to view their support openly. The common perception is that support for same-sex marriages is not as widespread as one would like it to be. |

In New York recently the Democrat-led Assembly voted 85-61 to legalize same-sex marriage. For most lawmakers supporting same-sex marriage, it a happy moment but there are still apprehensions. This was the first time that a legislative body in the state took steps to approve same-sex marriages. It shows that there are political supporters of same-sex marriage. However, it could not have been easy for political supporters. They must have had to painful choices coupled with a whole lot of political calculation.
By voting to legalize same-sex marriage, New York has become the second state in the U.S. to legalize gay marriage after Massachusetts, which was the first state to do so using the legislative process. Around 80 percent of Democrats voted to legalize same-sex marriage while just 4 Republicans out of a total of 42 voted in favor of the bill.
Many political supporters of same-sex marriage acknowledge that they have taken political risks by voting in the bill in New York because polls show that more New Yorkers are against same-sex marriage than those in favor for it; and the older generation is more anti same-sex marriage.
This clearly shows that political supporters are slowly breaking the shackles making decisions based more on political consideration rather than personal feelings.
